Great Wall of China at Badaling, Summer 2008
There are no words in any world language to describe the feeling atop the Great Wall of China, but I'll do my best. We took the cheaters' route and went up on a cable car. From there, we spent half an hour walking to a fire tower (the square stations). It's hot, there are literally thousands of people swarming around you, pushing and shoving, and the ridged walkways are harder to walk on than one might think. Yet, when you find yourself a little ridge and look out at the trees and hills, a breeze hits you, the noise is drowned out, and it's just plain calm. That feeling is simply priceless.
